Back To Skool I Go!!!

Well the time has come for me to go back to Skool!!!

I love learning and I love learning using the online platform http://www.Coursera.org. They offer a large variety of online courses from universities around the world for free! Yes, for free!! From business to art and pretty much everything in between. Of course I am mostly interested in taking art courses, and I have already taken a few of them over the last few years. This has also allowed me to meet some amazing people from around the world who are taking the same classes as me and with whom I have stayed in contact with to share our experiences and work… It’s so kool to meet people all over the globe who share an interest in the same subjects as I do and who are pursuing their art dreams too. At the moment, I am taking two art classes – check them out and join in if you like because Skool is Kool!!!

In The Studio : Postwar abstract Art – The Museum of Modern Art

Introduction to Image Making – California institute of the Arts

In other news, I have just gotten back to a very exciting Curators Workshop facilitated by Judith Williams, which started in the Fall and will continue until the end of May at The Cortes Island Museum. The workshop consists of curating the summer season’s upcoming show on Refugee Cove. I have learned a lot already and am very excited for the end results; I also look forward to sharing the show with you all. It’s a great team to be working with and a great opportunity to learn skills which I am sure to use in my future. xoxo

We are proud to welcome Robert Beringer, BGS, MA., experienced facilitator and researcher, to Powell River to host this LGBTQ community town hall event focusing specifically on issues facing LGBTQ communities living in rural or isolated areas such as ours. All ages are welcome to attend and the town hall format will provide a forum to share thoughts about community services (social and otherwise), health, wellness, aging, intergenerational connectedness, and diversity.

->>> Members of neighbouring communities are also encouraged to join <<<-

This is a free community event made possible by The Old Courthouse Inn and the Powell River Pride Society. We will be collecting donations from those who are able. No pressure. 100% of the donations will be going to Robert’s travel and accommodations.

During the evening Robert will present findings from his research into issues facing LGBTQ communities in rural areas in Canada and engage discussion regarding the specific needs and concerns within Powell River.

Encaustic Workshop

So last weekend, I found myself in a jam-packed workshop, instructed by Shary Bartlett and facilitated by  Lorna Downie in her beautiful studio at The Rodmay Hotel. Shary was very knowledgeable and faced our excitement at learning her techniques with great patience… and boy… did we learn a lot!!! We practised with many different materials and even got a little art history on the first use of wax in an artistic context including the Fayum mummy portraits* from Egypt’s Coptic period of 100-300 CE. It was all very inspiring and I look forward to bring encaustic techniques into my work in the future and continue to paint with wax. One advice in particular I will not forget is “Fuse it or Lose it” which has been forever engraved deep into my brain. Here are 3 of my finished pieces for reference.

Workshop & More

I am off to Powell River for the weekend – the town that never sleeps, full of culture and arts. I feel so fortunate that it’s only a boat ride away from the tranquility of my home on Cortes Island. I am attending a workshop on the technique of Encaustic – using wax and pigment – and I have been so looking forward to it! I will share what I learn in one of my posts next week. I am not only going for the workshop however, it’s going to be a jam-packed weekend with an artist talk Friday evening and then D.O.A and Those Things playing at the bowling alley. The workshop is Saturday all day and then there is the famous Haunted Ball, where 4 of my creations will be featured in the gallery. Could I have picked a better weekend to go off island ? I say, “No way!” I am looking forward to seeing all my friends, learning new techniques and getting a huge dose of straight-up culture in the one-stop wonder town of Powell River BC! I share the poster for The Haunted Ball.

Inspiration

Inspiration can come from so many different things and people. This past week, I had the pleasure to spend time with Kate Church and some fellow art doll artists @The Blue Moon Winery. It was very exciting to reunite with like-minded souls doing what we love. The techniques I have learned this past week are going to take me to the next level of creating. Kate Church is an amazing person to learn from; she is patient, understanding, and makes sure you leave with all your questions answered. She makes you want to break new ground and push yourself to the next level and is pure inspiration. I feel honoured to have had this experience. Weekly Photo Challenge – Spare

I spent the last week at the Blue Moon Winery in Courtney B.C. for an art doll workshop with Kate Church. There was so much growing on the farm, including blueberries, apples and much more. There also was a green house full of delicate flowers being Spared the possible brutal forces of nature; the young flowers are nicely protected from harm during the unpredictable spring showers and changing temperatures of the season.

Workshop with Kate Church

I am getting really excited about the upcoming workshop with Kate Church, on May 22nd to the 27th. This super exciting workshop is being held at The Blue Moon Winery. When I attended last year, I met some incredible new friends, learned some great new techniques using polymer clay, and without a doubt was thrilled to meet Kate Church and learn from her. This year, we are taking the craft of art dolls to the next level and I can’t wait to share with you all what I learn and create. In the meantime, let me share a peek at our homework and our inspiration for the workshop. Wishing you all the best day. xoxo
